Long before a mask became mandatory during the COVID pandemic, wearing a mask has been a part of Japanese lifestyle. During allergy season, many Japanese wear a mask to protect themselves from inhaling pollen. It is a common sight to see the majority of people in a crowd wearing masks on the street during the allergy season. When one has a cold and is symptomatic, most likely he or she wears a mask so a sneeze or cough would not bother other people. You may ask why you would be outside if the cold symptoms are so severe. Well, that is a cultural thing. Many Japanese believe sacrificing their health for work is a virtue. Unless they are critically ill, they would push themselves to work. So, masks are widely available at drug stores and convenient store. It is an essential item for most Japanese.
