What thoughts would come to mind looking at the image in this article? No, it’s not a ghost, or a man being hung. It is a Teruteru bozu (Sunshine Monk, a long “o” sound with bozu) to whom Japanese people rely on to make the sun appear. In Japan, you might see him hanging under the eaves of houses or in front of stores. It means whoever hung the bozu is wishing for a sunny day to follow for whatever the reasons. There is a spell to be cast while situating the bozu.
“Teruteru bozu, teru bozu, ashita tenki ni shiteokure.(てるてる坊主、てる坊主、明日天気にしておくれ)” that translates as “Sunshine monk shine monk, please make tomorrow sunny!”.
Buddhism and original Japanese Shinto religion coexisted in Japan for a long time, so influences from both are comingled in daily life. Teruteru bozu obviously came from Buddhism since bozu (a monk) doesn’t exist in Shintoism. Although Buddhism was imported, it is said that a tradition of hanging Teruteru bozu was invented in Japan by rice farmers sometime during the Edo era (1603-1868) begging for sunny days, presumably during the rainy season. Beginning from early June, the islands of Japan except Hokkaido are covered by slow moving rain system, and the month-long rainy season called Tsuyu begins. During the Tsuyu period, the appearance of the sun tends to be very sporadic. There is no proof, of course, that Teruteru bozu magic will work, but it might be worth trying, especially when you must have a sunny day tomorrow, and the weather forecast shows otherwise. All you need are either white clothes or paper and a string. Don’t forget to cast the spell! His power might be diminished without it.
